GIS Degree Programs – Guide to Choosing a Program

By Kat Campise, Data Scientist, Ph.D.

Geolocation systems are pervasive. Whether you’re simply taking an Uber (or Lyft) from point A to point B or an enterprise needs to track the location of its shipments, geographic or geospatial information systems (GISs) play a critical role in transporting people and things (sometimes dangerous things) safely. In a sense, those who earn a bachelor’s, master’s or a Ph.D. in GIS are the 21st-century version of geographers, but with an added technological twist:

  • Establishing a map area and the relevant symbology
  • Creating customized and standardized maps
  • Collecting and analyzing field data obtained from using a GPS
  • Designing, developing, and/or maintaining the GIS database
  • Meeting with clients to spec any app requirements they have for the geo-location/mapping systems

The above is merely a sample of the work that GIS graduates perform. But, in general, anything that has to do with geolocation systems will fall under the purview of a GIS job function. Although private enterprises utilize GIS personnel (Google Maps is a perfect example), approximately 57% of GIS employers are government entities, i.e., city, state, and Federal agencies. The more frequent job titles for GIS degree holders include the following:

  • GIS Analyst
  • GIS Technician
  • GIS Manager
  • GIS Coordinator
  • Consultant

In terms of compensation, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) lumps GIS salary data in with other geography-focused occupations. Per the BLS’s May 2021 survey, the median salary for geographers is $85,220 nationally. However, the top earners in this category sometimes make more than $118,380 annually. Those who’ve earned a GISP certification may earn more than their colleagues. Some work within the framework of specific companies while others find success as independent consultants.

Keep in mind that being an independent consultant isn’t as easy as earning a degree and affixing the title to your LinkedIn (or other social media) profile. Your level of education and verifiable experience of successful GIS projects are going to be the initial determinants of attracting clients. You’ll also need project management and business development skills, including marketing and sales, to round out a solid base for independent consulting. Being an independent GIS consultant has terrific financial perks, but it will be up to you to market and “sell” yourself to clients and initiate, plan, monitor, and close each client contract. Also, depending on how you construct the payment agreement, there’s an increased risk (vs. being employed by someone else) of issues with timely remuneration.

GIS experts who are employees, as opposed to being self-employed, usually have additional benefits and incentives that the enterprise or agency helps pay for: health insurance, retirement, college tuition reimbursement or ongoing professional education, equity shares, paid travel and accommodations for conferences, etc. Summarily, regardless of which GIS career path you choose, there is solid earning potential.

GIS Industry and Job Growth

In a 2018 report published by Prescient and Strategic Intelligence, the GIS market is projected to top $17 billion by the year 2023 with a heavy focus on the data side representing the most substantial portion of the total growth. Broadly speaking, the BLS projects geographer employment to grow very little through 2031. However, GIS graduates aren’t limited to that classification.

Cartographers and photogrammetrists, another GIS-related field of expertise, can expect a 3% growth in the number of available jobs through 2031. But those that focus on the data science aspect of the industry might be able to take advantage of the 36% employment growth rate projected for that sector by the BLS.

As such, there is plenty of opportunity in the GIS sector for those who have an interest in geolocation data and information systems. The sections below will cover the various pathways for launching a GIS career.

GIS Certifications

There are two main GIS certification organizations: GIS Certification Institute (GISCI) and Esri. GISCI offers the Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) certification for exam candidates who have at least 4 years of full-time geo-spatial work experience. You’ll need to create a portfolio that will be reviewed by GISCI and pass their GISCI Geospatial Core Technical Knowledge Exam. The total cost for U.S. applicants is $450: $100 application fee, $250 exam fee, $100 for the portfolio review. International applicants will pay $50 more for a total of $500. Plus, to keep the certification active, GISCI requires $95 annually, due on the 1st anniversary of your certification. If you allow your certification to lapse, meaning you’re not recertifying as per the recertification requirements, then you’ll need to go through the exam process again for another $450.

The Esri certification focuses on demonstrating proficiency in the ArcGIS software. Thus, it’s a technical certification that offers a plethora of different proof of knowledge avenues:

  • Desktop
  • Developer
  • Enterprise
  • Specialty

A multitude of individual exams is housed within each of these meta-categories. For example, if you choose the Desktop exam route, there are three possible choices: Desktop Entry, Desktop Associate, Desktop Professional. Each represents a minimum level of ArcGIS knowledge starting from beginner (Desktop Entry) to advanced (Desktop Professional). Esri does offer a virtual academy where candidates can take courses designed to help fill in ArcGIS knowledge gaps and for continuing education. The exams range from $150 to $250. Although this is far less in terms of financial outlay for a single exam, Esri isn’t certifying you in the GIS core knowledge; it’s affirming you have the knowledge and skill relevant to the ArcGIS software.

If you’re already employed in the GIS sector and working with ArcGIS, then both of the certifications are great knowledge, skill, and ability (KSA) signals for potential employers or for your current employer to possibly bump you up on the pay scale. However, if you’re brand new to GIS, then you’ll need to attain the foundational KSA via additional education and experience. One final note for this section: the GISCI and Esri certifications aren’t the same as completing a GIS certification program. A certification program requires that you take a prerequisite set of courses to earn a certificate, e.g., Coursera’s GIS Specialization, PennState World Campus’s Postbaccalaureate GIS Certification, etc.

Bachelor’s Degree in GIS

At this time, there are more on-campus options than online programs for a Bachelor’s Degree in GIS. Online programs are sparse, but they do exist. You can expect to complete major coursework in statistics, programming for GIS, information systems, geography, and natural sciences along with the required foundational classes (e.g., English, Humanities/Social Sciences, etc.). If you have the bandwidth to attend full time, then it’s likely that you’ll complete the degree within 4 years (on average the total number of credits for a bachelor’s degree is 120). Arizona State University has an online BS in Geographic Information Science that costs between $10,000 to $12,000 per year, depending on your residency status. Admission requirements vary and are determined by your student status: Freshman, Transfer, International, Readmission.

If your local university doesn’t offer a specific BA or BS in GIS, then a Bachelor’s in Geography or Cartography are alternative courses of study. Just about all undergraduate degree programs have elective requirements, so completing coursework in information systems is recommended if the above-mentioned degree programs don’t have a GIS component.

Master’s Degree in GIS

Master’s degree programs and post-baccalaureate certifications in GIS are more prevalent, and this is likely due to GIS being a newer technical sector that is aggregating increasing importance within the digital era.

So, why aren’t there more bachelors in GIS programs? One possible reason is the relative ease of constructing a 2 to 3-year program — especially online — versus launching a 4-year undergraduate degree. For the online version of a Master’s in GIS, it tends to be easier to find qualified instructors who are willing to work remotely than it is to source and hire GIS experts for on-campus coursework. The same can be said for attracting paying students. GIS isn’t as popular as data science, computer science or other STEM degrees.

Consequently, maintaining adequate funding levels can be a concern. For example, the University of Washington suspended its online Master of GIS due to their “limited resources” to sustain the program. Although online Master’s in GIS degrees can generate increased cash flow for academic institutions via rolling admission dates and organizing student cohorts, if there is little interest, then the degree program cannot be sustained.

Qualifying for entry, whether for an online or on-campus Master’s in GIS program is school dependent. Some universities will accept students who have not completed an undergraduate degree in geography but will require those students to complete prerequisites in physical geography, computer cartography, and geographic statistics (among others). Others require that you have an undergraduate degree in geography. Almost all universities require that you take the GRE, but the minimum cutoff scores for admission are where schools differ. Tuition costs for either an online or on-campus master’s in GIS fluctuate between $13,000 to over $50,000 per year. On average, you can expect the program to span 2 to 3 years. Keep in mind that schools calculate tuition costs only and usually do not include textbook or technological purchases required for successful program completion.

Ph.D. in GIS

Ph.D. programs for GIS are few and far between. You’re more likely to find universities offering a Ph.D. in Geography or Spatial Science. Online Ph.D.s in GIS are almost as rare as unicorns, but they do exist (see Walden University for more details).

But, earning a Ph.D. is a serious consideration that deserves a closer cost-benefit analysis. Usually, those who complete this rigorous course of determining a specific area of study for research, and then conducting research that is supposed to move the field forward, are setting themselves up for an academic career. It’s true that Ph.D.s have a higher potential earning rate over the life of their career. However, you do lose a not insignificant amount of earning power while you’re in school. As discussed above, independent GIS consultants can pull in higher cash flow when compared to the other GIS career trajectories.

Typically, Ph.D. programs from all disciplines will take you between 4 and 7 years to finish. All schools have a maximum amount of time allowed from start to finish. While many students can secure financial assistance through loans, scholarships, and grants, GIS is in the emerging phase of its interest cycle. Because of this, there may not be as many grants and scholarships available. Since a Ph.D. tends to be the equivalent of a full-time job, undertaking one demands financial sacrifice. Do you need to work and attend school? Will there be childcare or logistical issues? Analyze all possible constraints and risks that are directly relevant to your success as a Ph.D. student.

Applying for a Ph.D. in GIS or a related program does require that you have either an undergraduate or graduate (masters) degree in GIS or geography. By its nature, a Ph.D. is an extensive study for a discipline for which you have the fundamental KSA. The GRE is a definitive condition for admission. You’ll find that tuition costs for a Ph.D. mirror a masters degree; both are lumped in under “graduate tuition costs.” So, if you multiply the range listed for a master’s in GIS — $13,000 to $50,000 — by 4 years and 7 years, you’ll get a clearer picture as to expected financial outlay. But, this is for tuition only. It doesn’t include books and any other living or travel expenses that you incur.

Even though GIS careers are on an upward path, the ripple effect has yet to filter through to the bachelors and Ph.D. GIS programs. A majority of the academic emphasis is on the masters in GIS or GIS certifications. You don’t necessarily need to do both, but if you complete a masters in GIS and your employer pays for you to be certified, then this can help you with a future job search — or higher pay.
